Communication Studies Doctoral Student (Organizational Communication) Lacy Urbantke
As a first year doctoral student I was hesitant to add the IE Mentor commitment to my already overwhelming list of responsibilities, but I am so glad that I did. Not only did I enjoy the opportunity to provide some firsthand insight to a prospective graduate student in my field, the mentoring experience also helped to widen the perspective in my own little graduate world and remind me of my central motivation for pursuing higher education: to learn and help others learn.
The IE Internship is an invaluable resource for teaching and learning on a one-to-one basis, giving students the opportunity to ask questions openly and receive exclusive, unique access to the graduate student experience.
The IE Pre-Grad internship experience afforded me the opportunity to truly witness and have access to the authentic graduate school experience in a way that isn't possible in the traditional classroom setting. Because the curriculum and requirements are negotiated between the student and mentor, access to information and the opportunities for learning were virtually limitless.
